Chapter 18
Dar worked at the granite foundations all afternoon, only pausing to meditate to restore his mana. Heâd sat with Blair a few times, working with her to mediate together. She had been able to pass on some of the techniques she used to get even closer to her dao. Heâd also found that being closer to his dao had made meditating and restoring his mana easier.
But what had really surprised him was Blair. Focused on helping him with his technique, sheâd put aside some of the constant come-ons, and heâd seen a clearer picture of who she was under all the flirting.
Thereâd been a few moments when he couldnât help the smile on his face as sheâd eagerly talked about her meditation practice, often babbling on about some breathing technique or visualization. He finally felt like they were connecting on a more real level. Maybe the talk had helped.
As the sun started to set, they called it a day, moving to join the community in the center of the village. Neko was well enough that she left the hut and joined them, although she was still weak.
âI got her.â Dar scooped Neko up and plopped her on his lap. âMarcie, can you get another bowl of food?â
The quiet maid nodded and hurried to move.
Taking his own bowl, he spooned out a portion and held it up for Neko. âSay, Ah.â
âAh.â Neko opened her mouth wide and rested against Dar.
âYou spoiled brat.â Mika shook her head. âYou know sheâs milking this?â
Neko blew her tongue at Mika before her ears flattened to her head, and she looked back up at Dar innocently. âNeko good. But Neko tired.â
The whole circle laughed at her antics.
âWhat do you say, Sasha? Is she good enough to eat on her own?â Dar asked.
âShe still needs the help. But be good, Neko, donât antagonize Mika.â Sasha wagged her finger at Neko.
She went quiet and cuddled into Dar. âNeko be good,â she said before opening her mouth again, asking for food.
Dar didnât mind helping her eat. In fact, he enjoyed taking care of her like he would any of his girls, but in this moment, she truly needed it and doing so only brought a warmth to his chest.
They finished up dinner and moved onto the leadersâ meeting.
After meeting with the other leaders and not hearing anything out of the ordinary, Dar worked to cut the evening short, anxious to get back to their hut. Sasha and Cherry were right on his heels.
As they stepped inside, Dar pulled Sasha to him to give her a kiss, but all he got was a quick peck. Surprised she wasnât moving to rip his clothes off like usual, he was met with a serious face.
âInner world first!â Her excitement shone in her eyes, and Dar just laughed.
Nodding, he stepped back.
âNow, when you feel it tug you, try to go with it. Donât resist at all or itâll hurt him,â Cherry explained.
Sasha leaned back, wariness entering her face. âMaybe I shouldnât? What if I do it wrong? I donât want to hurt you, Dar.
